I wasn't the kid who had the skills of a basketball player from day one. I became one through belief, sacrifice, guidance and work.
I grew up in San Jose as the youngest of three siblings. My mother, older brother and father introduced me to sports, and I first tried out for a basketball team in sixth grade. I almost didn’t make it. That moment became the beginning of my basketball journey.
I was a late bloomer. I started later than many of my peers and had to learn the fundamentals, the details and the X’s and O’s later than I wanted. But I always believed I could become more than my ability showed at times — and I’m glad I did. I put in work before school, at practice and late at night after practice.
I understand the grind of a hungry hooper. I know what it feels like to have the basketball look without the matching skill set, and what it feels like when the skill starts catching up to the look. I know the bench, the losing seasons, the frustration, the coach who is disappointed or yelling, and the conditioning you earn for your own mistakes and your team’s mistakes.
Those experiences taught me that confidence, attitude and work ethic are things you can continue to control even when the circumstances around you are not in your control. Guidance matters, and individual development matters.
I’ve worked with kids ages 5–15 through organizations, teams and camps. Every Hoop Is Home is my way of taking what I’ve learned and sharing it with the next generation.
“Every Hoop Is Home is my way of taking what I’ve learned and sharing it with the next generation.”
Every Hoop Is Home came to me at a park in Bakersfield I had never played at before. I stepped onto the court and made well over 20 shots in a row. The feeling was familiar — like I was at home.
Then it clicked: that feeling wasn’t about that one park. It was about what happens when your preparation, confidence and consistency travel with you.
